Shahid Akhtar is the Editor-in-Chief of the Digital Review of Asia Pacific 2009-2010. He is also an independent international advisor cum consultant based in Ottawa, Canada. From 2001 to 2007, he was the Chief Technical Adviser and Programme Coordinator for UNDP's Bangkok based Asia-Pacific Development Information Programme (APDIP), which seeks to promote the application of new information and communication technologies for sustainable human development throughout the Asia-Pacific region. Prior to joining APDIP, Shahid worked in various capacities at the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada. This included stints in IDRC's offices in Beirut and Singapore, and in its Head Office in Ottawa. While working for IDRC between 1971 and 1995, he initiated and managed scores of projects on information and communication technologies, networking, and systems development in over 60 developing countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Shahid left IDRC in 1995 to join the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) in Kathmandu, Nepal, where he managed its information and communication programmes in the Himalayan countries.
